The use of debit and credit cards has increase but still people are being careful about what kind of card should be used. In the year between 2002 and 2005 it was reported that the number of households using cash point card or debit card increased from 47 to 60 percent. In addition, transactions with debit cards now equals the number of purchases made with cash in the shops (each representing about 33 percent of the total number of transactions), according to the study of Consumer Payment Preferences, 2005 — 2006, American Bankers Association (American Bankers Association) and Dove Consulting.
While cash payments have been stable at 33 percent since 2001, the use of debit cards in the same year saw a growth surpassing 21 percent of purchases made in stores. Meanwhile, the use of a credit card fell from 21 percent of purchases made in stores in 2001 to 19 percent in 2005.
With the increase in the demand for debit card there has been a drastic decrease in the use of credit card.
